Here at The Ruckus we like music. You might say we 'like, like' music. Ok, ok, we love music. Happy now? Anyway, whilst we cover a lot of stuff here, there's not always time to talk about everything. That's where Listening Game comes in. Every week, members of The Ruckus staff (and maybe some 'celebrity' contributors) give a summary of the things we've been checking out in the week just gone. Whether it's the latest release from our favourite band, a surprising support act, or even that something cool has just floated into our inbox, this is where we'll tell you about it. Think about it like that friend who puts you on to all the cool bands; only cooler. Yeah...I said it
This week, Ruckus Editor, Anthony Barlow is flying solo and wants to tell you about the interesting new LP from Esmé Patterson and a new track from, dreamy indie punks, Bruising. Hopefully he'll remember to email everyone else next week and it won't just be him
Esmé Patterson - Woman To Woman
Although it might have been out a little while in the US, Esmé Patterson's Woman To Woman sees its UK release this week via Xtra Mile Recordings. This one woman rock and roll show merges the spirit of riot grrl with a vintage sound and aims to tell the other side of the story. Want to know what Jolene thought when Dolly Parton said she was going to steal her man, or a bit more about the woman behind The Beach Boys' 'Caroline, No'? Well, let Esmé tell you. Having seen her perform, in support of Frank Turner, as part of last week's Independent Venue Week I can't get enough so it's a good job that Woman To Woman is finally seeing a proper release here.
Bruising - 'Can't You Feel?'
Bruising is definitely one of the bands to watch in 2015. Making their debut with 'Can You Feel?' the indie-punk two piece blend driving and distorted guitar with gentle, dreamy, vocals - a clash in styles that works surprisingly well. This latest single, the follow up to 'Honey', started streaming over at DIY Mag last week (just after we put up the first Listening Game) and I haven't stopped listening since. Full of depth and with a catchy chorus, it's just what you need to assuage the winter blues. Expect to see them popping up everywhere throughout 2015; hopefully with a few festival appearances under their belt by this time next year. 'Can't You Feel?' is coming out on the latest Beech Coma compilation and you can find details about that here.
