Josh Ritter, Novelist

Favorite of The Ruckus, Josh Ritter, has written a novel. Bright's Passage is due to be released through Random House in Summer of 2011. Composed while recording his upcoming album So Runs the World Away (to be released May 4th), we can expect complicated narratives from both pieces.

As followers of Josh Ritter know, the musician is an avid reader and has named Muriel Spark and Philip Roth among his favorite authors in interviews. One can even find a bookmark in his online store.

I can't imagine Bright's Passage will be anything but brilliant and will be waiting anxiously for both releases from Mr. Ritter.

People We Like: John Hughes

John Hughes died, tragically young, on Thursday afternoon. He was an incredible writer, director and producer whose films helped to shape the lives of children of the 80s (I'm one of them, as I'm sure are many of you), and continue to do so with each new generation.

The gentleman was inimitably brilliant. His films are timeless, undeniable classics, and he will be keenly missed. I'm sort of at a loss for words, but Summer Pierre isn't. She said it better than I could have with a fantastic tribute to Hughes and some of his best films, so go read that. Other moving tributes by great bloggers can be found here and here.

What is your favorite John Hughes film? The Breakfast Club tops my list, followed closely by Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, and Some Kind of Wonderful.

Aesthetic Apparatus

So, I keep meaning to tell you about Aesthetic Apparatus, this super cool design studio founded around 1999 in Madison, Wisconsin by Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski. They used to consider themselves "Minneapolis' best totally unknown design super team", but with clients like Harper Collins, Chronicle Books, and a whole bunch of awesome bands that we all know and love, I don't think that they can make a case for obscurity any longer (and they're probably not even trying). Anyway, I've been buying prints from them for my own place and as gifts for awhile, and I was reminded that I wanted to tell you about them when our friend Colleen from The Pretty Pear told us about The Poster List (another very excellent pop art poster shop).

So, here I am very early in the morning (or not so early, if you're across the pond) to show you some of the limited edition 18" x 24" and 19" x 25" prints that Aesthetic Apparatus sells on their site for a mere $20 a pop. These are true limited editions, so when they sell out, that's it; no reprints, ever. What that means is that if you see one you like, buy it, because it is never coming back except on eBay where you will pay $75 for it while you inhale a pint of Chunky Monkey and cry about the mistake you made. Or maybe I'm the only one who experiences reverse buyer's remorse, but I doubt it, so don't let that happen to you.

Avoid disappointment and smarten up your pad here.
