Big Tune: Sunday Girl

Sunday Girl (AKA Jade Williams) has been creating quite a buzz in the blogging community lately, with her first single "Four Floors" heading straight to the top of the Hype Machine chart through blogging buzz alone.

She claimed her slightly odd moniker through working in a pet store on Sundays when she was 14. No one could remember her name and so just called her Sunday Girl and it apparently stuck. I have to say the name has made me remember her, from when she was first mentioned to me at the start of the year, and has made me check out her music when given the chance. Something about her has clearly made others sit up and notice too, seeing she has been featured in Dazed and Confused, NME and on the Guardian paper's website. A keen blogger herself, her blog has quickly become one of my favourites since I bookmarked it a few months ago.

This single is called "Self Control" and is a cover of a song originally by RAF and later a hit for Laura Branigan in the States. I am not usually a big fan of covers, but when an artist can stamp their unique stye on a song like Sunday Girl does here then I am all for them.

The Ruckus went to Blissfields Festival

A summer of festivals for the London Ruckus girls and I headed over to Bradley Farm in Hampshire to take in Blissfields Festival. If you saw my initial previews you'd have known I was a bit excited for the weekend. Side note: the weather turned out to be perfect, I got a little sunburnt and it only rained a little at night so that worked extremely well. I'm going to break down the logistics (portaloos, for example) and the music for you. This is why you should go to Blissfields.

Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling Announce Collaboration

In very exciting news, Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling have announced the release of an EP in collaboration with the Dharohar Project, to be relaeased on iTunes on the 5th of July.

In December the Mumford boys and Laura toured India, and while they were there they met up with this Rajasthani folk group in Delhi, and recorded some songs, including reworkings of their own tracks. They have decided to release this to conincide with the two gigs they are putting on with the Dharohar Project this July (one for the iTunes festival in London on the 9th of July, and one in Bradford on the 12th.

The EP will include reworkings of Mumford and Sons' song "To Darkness" and Laura Marling's track "Devil's Spoke" as well as two new tracks.

I for one am very excited for this EP. I spent a memorable night in an Ashram in India one summer, and the music I heard there was so beautiful and I can imagine the collaboration with the Mumford boys and Laura will be something very special.

A Folk lover's festival for a good cause

Like folk? Need to go to a festival on the cheap? This one's for you. It's a summer of festivals for two of the London Ruckus girls and one of our folk favourites, Matthew & The Atlas (signed to Communion) are headlining a very special Folkie festival; Barn on the Farm which donates all profits to charity. We love 'I Will Remain' on the 'To The North' EP, it's beautiful rousing folk and truly AMAZING live with full band. It's even more special when you see his friends get up on stage to help with the percussion.

This ultra-intimate festival donates all profits to two very important charities - Global Footsteps and Friends of Nowder, both of which support social, economic and environmental sustainability projects globally.

Barn on the Farm has a folkin' good line up, including the truly fantastic Adelaide's Cape (who I interviewed back in May) and other emerging folk talent such as Spindle & Wit. Spindle & Wit were bought to my attention via the press for Barn on the Farm and I like. A lot. It's the type of folk which won't have you just sitting there, they're crowd movers, or at least 'Way Down the Street' will have you clapping your hands which is always a sign that a Folk gig has gone down well. They have grit for sure. Plus A+ on the Folkie name. Check out Frank Hamilton, who lists 'peppermint tea' as one of his influences on his MySpace. His demo for 'Standing on Your Street', mixes pop and piano, and isn't exactly folk but it's worth a look for sure.

Five Questions for Darwin Deez (At Latitude)

As part of the Latitude Festival previews we have given you a couple of interviews with artists set to perform at the festy, which shall be known as 'the best line up ever'. 2010 has seriously outdone itself.

Let's get to know those NYC Indie-popsters Darwin Deez who are playing the Sunshine Arena.

1. When you think of Latitude what 5 words spring to mind?
Tents, beer, sunrise, waking and baking.

2. If you could only see one performance at this year's festival what would it be?
It would be between Grizzly Bear and Laura Marling I think.

3. What 5 items will you be bringing to Latitude?
Picks, earplugs, my glasses, my guitar and a smile of excitement.

4. Do you have anything special planed for your performance at Latitude?
Not yet, but it's still a long way away. We might do.

5. Latitude is 5 years old, how did you celebrate your fifth birthday?
