Murray James – In Session

Written by Sheena  //  October 12, 2011  //  Features, Video  //  No comments

Murray James is a singer songwriter who has been gathering quite a bit of attention lately. He has one of those bluesy voices that you expect to come from an old, whisky soaked soul, and so it can come as quite a shock when you discover he is blonde and pretty. In fact Noel Gallagher apparently exclaimed “Fuck Off! You can’t be him. I thought you were black!” when he met Murray.

He hails from a tiny British sea-side town called Milton-On-Sea, and seems to have had quite an eventful life so far, having first played the Albert Hall at 17 and having toured with Candi Stratton at the same age. He signed to a Major at 16, and seems to have had quite a bumpy ride as part of the major machine, something I am sure many of the artists we cover can empathise with. Eventually finding himself living with an Ex-Army general who asked him for drugs money all the time, and a lesbian who wrote children’s books on acid, he eventually decided enough was enough and he didn’t want to be a pop star anymore. At that point he learnt to write from the heart and become a true artist, and while I wouldn’t wish the bad stuff that came before on anyone, it lead to us all getting another great singer songwriter out of it.

He is currently recording a set of live stripped back sessions, every Tuesday at 7pm for 7 weeks. They are being filmed in a East London strip club, of all places, and are shaping up to be gorgeous. So today we bring you the fourth of those sessions. Enjoy, and remember you can watch them live on Murray’s Facebook every week.
