Five Fantastic Independent Scottish Bands From Dave Hughes
Written by WTR // September 12, 2011 // Features // No comments
We are honored to have folk-rocker Dave Hughes take us on a journey through his favorite independent Scottish music [via YouTube]. The accents make me a little weak in the knees, personally, so I was quite excited for this feature. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. If you’re hungry for more amazing music, go listen to some of Dave’s here.
1. Help Save the Youth of Cumnock and Doon Valley – Roscoe Vacant
This song is basically what is happening in Scotland right this moment. Roscoe writes political songs that break your heart on repeated listens. “Red benches painted black won’t bring our populations back”. Indeed.
2. I Used To Be Eloquent – Mark McCabe
What do you get when you take a boy out of Scotland and place him in Paris? Only the ideal song about being alone in one of the most populous cities on earth.
3. Our Corrupting Influence – Carnivores
It’s not all skinny boys with acoustic guitars. Some of them graduate to face punching rock. Carnivores are without a doubt the best example of this. This was their first single, released last year, it’s the complete opposite of spending a night with 400 Thread Count bedsheets.
4. Wasted Getaway – Tragical History Tour
A voice that’s rougher than a badger smoking 50 a day singing a sweet song about wasting days away. Guarantee this refrain will be stuck in your head for days.
5. Silo the Fire – Esperi
A guy, an acoustic guitar and a loop station. No wait, come back, I didn’t mention the toys. Or the drum kit, or the bass guitar, or the tubes of plastic! Seriously. This guy needs to be seen to be believed.
Dave Hughes is a folk singer from Glasgow, Scotland. He plays up and down the UK all the time, and has just released his first album for a label. It’s called Despite the Blackout and is available through Corporate Records. When I’m not doing that I’m working in a lab doing science. You can visit him at davehughesmusic.co.uk.
