Exclusive Take Over: The Castells on Tour
Written by Lizzie // September 29, 2011 // Features, Live // No comments
If you don’t know The Castells, you will. Yes I am going to refer you to my own coverage of them at The Great Escape (that’s a bit like retweeting yourself, really). Having supported fellow Northerners, Frankie and the Heartstrings, these lads ooze attitude and stage presence, with a little Northern charm/stage banter and with dirty guitar riffs and raw vocals The Castells took themselves on tour to Germany, and thus took over The Ruckus. Throw in some ‘interesting’ shirt designs, a dodgy moustache and the odd compromising photo and we have a tour blog. What happens on tour never really stays on tour…
(beware: this post contains some nudity and a lot of Geordie talk).

Day 1
London
London was great. We always love playing there. The show went very well indeed . A flying visit pretty much so we jumped in the splitter to Dover. Mick (Our Driver/Head of Security) popped on his darts shirt and became his alter ego ‘Champagne Super Parkswee’ for the rest of the trip.
Day 2
Over the Channel and in to France, through Belgium and Holland and we arrived in Hamburg. Such a cool place! After a quick tour of the red light district we loaded in to the venue and sound checked before having dinner at a nice gaff near the venue. This was the first time Sam didn’t have a “plain hamburger with ketchup”. Steaks all round except Scotty who got a salad!

After we ate we headed Back to the venue and we were greeted by a fridge filled with just water! We are Tee Total ! Ha ha only kidding it was full of Beer. UP THE MAGS!
The show was beyond all our expectations. The venue was rammed and the crowd was so up for it. The Germans know how to go on! An encore and 4 sweaty Castells later, the Hamburg gig was a banger! An eventful first night in Germany ensued. Chris and Danny’s sexual journey was cut short and Danny took it upon himself to get lost in the pissing rain for two hours. Safe to say “Champagne Super Parkswee’ had things covered! After a soaking wet tour of Hamburg Danny was found. We had a quick kip in the Artist Apartment and then headed to Berlin.

Day 3
After the dust had settled and Danny was being spoken to by everyone we grabbed our kit and headed to Berlin. The weather had come on side making our arrival into Berlin even greater! Amazing graffiti and art all over had us taking photos left, right and centre! Banksy eat your heart out! We had a quick scout about and found a sweet little pub . Beers 1 Euro 20 ? Gan on then Young Un. We sat their for a while and watched Berlin go by. So many good vibes in that town. The locals were ace. Especially the crazy old man in the pirate socks. Our lasting memory of the trip will be what we saw across the street from the pub! My My My…All we are saying!

Time for load in and sound check! Magnet was sure to be a hell of night too with a venue like that. All fed and watered (again) and greeted by another full fridge of beer we started to prepare for Germany round 2. Cue the somewhat questionable shirts (SAM)!

Time to go on stage in front of a very large and lively crowd who gave us some interesting chants and shout-outs to say the least! “South Shields”!!!!! Another banging set and what a response.
Back upstairs to get changed and we were let loose! Did we mention that Germany is home to a lot of beautiful women? After a long and boozy night we headed Back to the hotel at about 6am with the inevitable noise complaint awaiting us. Back on the road at 10am and one hotel room in Berlin was left with one somewhat moist bed (we won’t say any more on that) and considerably fewer coat hangers courtesy of Scotty’s boomerang throws out the window. A few stops to allow Scotty and Sam to whitey their guts up and we were on route back home! Germany had been unreal. Great people! Great food! Great beer and two unforgettable shows! We’ll definitely be going back! Nice Mind Young Un!
So you’ll be wanting to head to The Castells Facebook to let them know you read this and heard about them ‘whiteying’ (vomiting) their guts up. They play Hoxton Bar & Grill on October 19th.
