Laura Stevenson and the Cans – Sit Resist
Laura Stevenson’s work is always a little bit strange, a little bit sad, and a lot stellar. She writes with a chill-inducing take on the world that comes off as shockingly honest and ranges from feelings of bliss and feelings of discomfort within the same song. Her voice is one of my favorite in music right now and it absolutely soars through Sit Resist. Like 90% of the music I listen to, I’d throw Laura Stevenson and the Cans in the folk rock genre, but they really cover a lot more ground then that. Sit Resist comes off as a bit experimental and eccentric, hovering in a bit of an undefinable space. But I think that’s part of what makes me love Laura and the Cans so much.
“Halloween Pts. 1 & 2″ which is lush and lovely opens the album. The goosebumps start immediately. The sound that caused me to call this band haunting before is stronger than ever. “Master of Art” has only grown on me. It started as a song that I liked and has become one of the best of the year for me. “Caretaker” launches the storytelling of the album. “The Healthy One” carries a bit of pop catchyness and often causes me to sing and tap along.
Laura Stevenson and the Cans – The Healthy One
I think I could highlight every track on Sit Resist here. It was an easy album to get attached to and I’ve played it pretty incessantly. The current climax of the record comes with “The Wait” as Laura pleads and the instrumentation crashes in the background:
this is the movement / break my legs with the strength of a thousand / won’t you take / a once very capable brain / make it quiet / make it sane / I’ll never be able to walk the same again
Sit Resist really shows off the ability of Laura Stevenson and the Cans. It’s awesome to see this band get the backing and the production they deserve to help them reach their full potential. The album is available now in CD or LP (with immediate mp3 downloads) from Insound. Laura and the Cans are playing Denver with Ruckus favoritest Fake Problems on April 30th at the Marquis Theater. Lovely review for a great album from a superb band. We played a show with them in Stockton, CA where no one turned up at all, so we just played to each other and the local singer/songwriter opener. They absolutely blew us off stage – blisteringly good. Class band, very sweet people.
