Bad Dreams

Songs about dreams are a dime a dozen. For this mix, I decided to focus on the darker side. These tracks all contain the most vivid of imagery that I absolutely lose myself in every time, just like the nightmares themselves.
1. Josh Ritter – Change of Time
Admittedly, this is the first song that comes to mind on the topic in general. My favorite artist and an amazing track.
I had a dream last night
I dreamt that I was swimming
And the stars up above
Directionless and drifting
Somewhere in the dark
Were the sirens and the thunder
And around me as I swam
The drifters who’d gone under
2. Laura Marling – Night Terror
The atmosphere this song creates starts from the first seconds of scratching and shuffling. Laura’s voice is stark and breathtaking.
If I look back and he is screaming,
I’d left him dreaming, the dangers fade,
I’ll run back and shake him tightly
And scream “if they want him, then they’re gonna have to fight me”
3. The National – Conversation 16
This song is abstract and gloomy. It gives me chills, as pretty much everything The National put out does. It reminds me a bit of a horror movie.
The National – Conversation 16
Now we’ll leave the silver city ’cause all the silver girls
Gave us black dreams
Leave the silver city ’cause all the silver girls
Everything means everything
4. The Cure – The Dream
What would a mix about nightmares be without The Cure? This is an old, old favorite. The floating themes leave me a little sad every time.
Rest your head
Oh just put it outside
All wrapped up in ribbons
The night
The dream
The time love died
5. Frank Turner – I Am Disappeared
This song just surfaced in it’s final form. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened and I can’t get over how fantastic it is. The stories pile up on each other and twist, just like a dream. [Pro tip: you can download the high quality version now here.]
Frank Turner – I Am Disappeared
Amy worked in a bar in Exeter
And went back to her house and I slept beside her
She woke up screaming in the middle of the night
Terrified of her own insides
