New Pitch-Perfect Fleet Foxes Video for “Grown Ocean”

Written by Kenzie  //  March 30, 2011  //  Video  //  2 Comments

I am really, really excited for Helplessness Blues, out May 3rd. Fleet Foxes recently released this video for “Grown Ocean,” one of the songs from said album. In my opinion, the video perfectly suits the tone of basically everything Fleet Foxes have ever done, but it seems particularly appropriate to “Grown Ocean.” Enjoy.

Are you excited for the new release? What do you think of the “Grown Ocean” video?

So this song (and video) and the title track from the new album are both great. However, I’m having a really hard time fully getting into the rest of the new stuff I’ve heard so far from them. It is the same reason I was probably the only one on earth not in love with their debut: the songs aren’t focused. ‘Grown Ocean’ and ‘Helplessness Blues’ have twists and turns, sure, but there is a common theme that keeps them on track and give the listener something to latch on to and remember as a whole. The rest of the album that I’ve heard has its flashes of brilliance, but it remains an unfocused work as a whole. You get a piece here or a piece there which are utter brilliance (the 60s pop in parts of ‘Beduoin Dress’ are fantastic) but it’s always sandwiched in a song with 75 other themes to go along with it, thus reducing its impact. I dunno. I had really high hopes for the album, thinking it might be a more restrained, less self indulgent effort, but it’s sort of let me down. I still think ‘Helplessness Blues’ and ‘Grown Ocean’ are two of the stronger songs I’ve heard this year though.

I agree with you, actually – and I love thoughtful replies like this from people who know music. The lack of focus is what keeps me from completely loving them.
