Live: Danielle Spencer

It is not every day that I get invited to industry showcases, and even more rare that they are for the wife of a Hollywood superstar. But that’s what happened when The Ruckus were asked to come and see Danielle Spencer play. Could Danielle be more than the wife of a famous actor (in this case, Russell Crowe) and wannabe musician? We were about to find out.
In a room full of industry types and magazine journalists we gathered to listen to tracks from this antipodean singer’s new album. Waiting for her to come on stage we weren’t sure quite what to expect; her last album was released 9 years ago and so wasn’t much of an indication in terms of musical style. The press release we had been sent was promising, but can only say so much.
Suddenly a tiny blonde beauty took to the stage with her band, happily chatting away in a strong Australian accent. Her presence was quite striking, filling the stage even when seated behind her keyboard. And when she opened her mouth to sing the sound was delicate yet had tremendous depth.
The songs she played from new album Calling all Magicians were melodic and pretty, and the vocals from Danielle and her backing singer held the interest of a difficult crowd. The buzz after was all positive, and it definitely seems that Danielle Spencer won’t be known as just “Russell Crowe’s wife” for much longer.
